2022/2023

This annual report covers Foundation activities from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023, and exceptionally includes Foundation reponse to the needs in Israel following the October 7 terror attack for the period October 2023 - March 2024.

Message from Our Chair

The fiscal year of the Foundation begins on October 1. The annual external audit of the Foundation for the prior fiscal year occurs in March and that usually brings us to the time when we are able to assemble a comprehensive report of expenditures and activities. This year the process was particularly unusual as the week following the current fiscal year began with the massacre by Hamas in Southern Israel, the taking of hostages and the outbreak of war. These occurrences resulted in a new reality in both Israel and North America and required a quick pivot in the 23/24 strategy.

Fundamental to the work of the Morris and Rosalind Family Foundation is a commitment to society at large wherever we reside and alongside that is a deep tie to our roots as part of the Jewish people. These two elements are key to both our mission and passion and define this 2022/2023 Annual Report. The report reflects the belief that we are collectively required to listen, learn and respond and this year has brought new challenges which we are prepared to face as a family foundation.

Along with presenting this report on activity it is important to acknowledge the individual and collective work of my family in philanthropy and their exceptional interest in growing the Foundation in both size and professionalism as we move into the third generation of engagement. This past year my father Morris Goodman, CM, OQ, celebrated his 92nd birthday and alongside that we have seen his grandchildren becoming more involved in family philanthropic activity. It is my greatest wish that the Foundation will flourish for generations, defined by passion, strategy and creativity.

Message from Our President

Each year the Board of Director reviews the performance for the prior year while approving a plan for the year to follow based on key performance indicators prepared by management. The performance of the Foundation is considered through three elements, financial (both investment performance and complying with government regulations), meeting benchmarks established in the prior year for grants and finally the value of the Foundation as a member of the philanthropic and civic communities.

Important to the MRGFF brand and that which follows the values of the Founders, is that we are not only here to give but also to strengthen the non-profit environment at large. By responding to requests for consultation, assistance in networking, offering our human assets to other organizations for training, organizing workshops, together with other family foundations, to support the non-profit professional field or by family members and management volunteering for committee and board positions, the Foundation exists as a dedicated “community partner.

”These activities also provide learning opportunities and the ability to listen and question as we see challenges not always evident from the usual granting perspective. While we are now deep into an unexpected time defined by a rise in hate directed towards the Jewish community and all supporters of Israel, we renew our commitment to creatively considering how the Foundation can best contribute to this new reality along with carrying out the critical work that defines our value in education, scientific research and quality of life. Both elements being fundamental to the Foundation mission.

Batsheva Dance Company

Established in 1964 as a repertoire company by the Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild, The Batsheva Dance Company is one of the world’s most prominent and renowned dance troupes. The company stands at the forefront of the local and international dance world, thanks to the bold choreographic voice of the house choreographer Ohad Naharin and to the uncompromising quality of the company’s dancers.

The support provided by the Foundation enables Batsheva to create new works, to allow the dancers to develop their own creative talents, to present rich repertoire seasonally in Israel and abroad, and to produce their masterful educational programs that send Batsheva’s enticing style of dance to schools all across Israel.

Formal Education
